Are You Planning to Fail?

2009 -- Did it turn out the way you wanted it to -- or not?

Think back to January 2009.  I'll bet you had some grand ideas about
where you wanted to be at this time!  Did you get there?  The most
common reason for this is failing to adequately plan -- or like the title of
this article -- planning to fail.

So, how can you make next year different?

First, let me give you a scenario to help you understand what went
wrong.

There's this amazing restaurant in Japan called the Ninja.  It's a secret
restaurant. Only a few people even know that it exists, much less where
it is.  Think of this restaurant as your Big Dream or your goal for the end
of 2010.

What if you were suddenly plopped down in the middle of Japan with a
car and plenty of gasoline and money to last a few weeks?  Your
mission is to find the Ninja restaurant. Do you think you could do it?

In this scenario you begin by driving around until you run out of gas and
money.  You have no idea where you are going or how to identify if you
even arrived there.

OK, let's make this a bit easier.

Let's say I gave you a local map.  This is the life equivalent to one of
those self help books.  Even if the map was printed in English you still
have two problems.  You don't know exactly where you are on the map
and you don't know exactly where you are going.  You can read self
help books all day long, but unless you have an ACCURATE idea of
where you actually are right now, it won't help you much.  You may think
you're "not good enough" or that you are "better than that."  Inaccurate
thinking like this will make it impossible to find your starting point on the
map.

OK.  I'll make it even easier.  You speak Japanese.

So, you decide to start asking people for the location of the Ninja
restaurant.  The trouble is that the people you meet have never heard of
the Ninja restaurant.  They don't know it exists.  These are like your
random friends who typically say things like, you'll never be able to do
that.  Why are you so ambitious?  Not helpful.

You're now getting tired, hungry, and frustrated.  If only you had
someone to help you stay motivated.  Someone who was really hungry
and wanted to taste some great Japanese food!  Do you see how
having someone to hold you accountable might keep you focused even
after you felt the task was impossible?  That's something coaches do.
They believe in you even when you don't.  They help you to stay focused
and remember your big dream -- your Ninja restaurant.

So, armed with a hungry backseat driver, you continue on.  You run
across someone who has heard of the restaurant.  And... they have no
idea where it is.  Sigh.  This is like hiring a coach with no actual
experience of clients.  Without a track record, all the degrees and book
learning in the world won't help much.

At last, you find someone who has heard of this restaurant.  They know
the neighborhood where it's located.  They get in the car with you and
direct you to the location.  Yet you still can't find it -- because the door is
disguised.  Only people who have actually been inside the restaurant
know how to identify the door and get it to open.

What you REALLY need is someone who has heard of this restaurant,
knows where it is, and has actually been there.  Someone with
experience guiding people to get where you want to go.

That is why you must have an experienced coach (like me) to help you
achieve your goals.

Imagine you have done everything you dream of accomplishing
by the end of next year -- right now.

Did you lose the weight?  Did you get that big promotion?  Have you
started a new business?  Your next philanthropy?  What about creating
a 6 figure income?  How does it feel?  How happy are you?  What is
your new lifestyle like?  Are you smiling right now just thinking about it?
What would that be worth to you?  $1,000?  $10,000?  Is it priceless?

Now imagine you have NOT accomplished any of your 2010
dreams.

Oh you made the plans (traveled to Japan).  Maybe you bought a map
(self help book) and maybe you even have met a few people who don't
think your plans are silly.  And still nothing is very much different than it
is today.  Kind of like last year, huh?

How do I know?  I have talked to so many people this year who are
upset about the economy and fearful -- afraid of losing a job, a client, or
just plain fearful in general.  What would it be worth to you to avoid that
feeling?  What would it be worth to KNOW that next year will be
different than all the endless years that you hoped for change and saw
nothing?

I completely understand and I can help you.  You see, while I've
never been the THE Ninja restaurant, I've been to yours.  I will expertly
help you figure out where you are, support you in where you want to go,
and walk with you to your 2010 year end destination -- or at least the
first, most important steps.  It's what I do.

So what WOULD it be worth to you?

without Theresa’s coaching.”

"I was very pleased with
the coaching I received.
The coaching helped me
deal with work related
stress, acceptance of a
promotion, and
development of a job
description and
management strategies to
support that position. It
also helped me make a
decision about going
back to school in a new
field I plan to pursue in
three or four years.

I appreciate Theresa’s
excellent listening,
synthesizing,organizing,
and focusing skills. She
helped me make the best
use of our time during
our coaching sessions
despite my somewhat
disjointed needs. The
homework that came out
of our sessions was
always appropriate and
supportive of my short-
term and long-term
needs."
